Spot on, I definitely agree that a leader is essential for abrasion resistance in structure. But we were on banks so 🤷‍♂️

Yes agreed. Fair point. But no need to bother if abrasion resistance isn’t an issue.

THIS ONLY MY OPINION:
When fishing from a boat in deepish water, the lures we use invoke the predatory strike instinct from fish.
They're really not concerned about lines at all in that moment.
We use braided lines to improve bite detection and to increase casting distance when fishing from the shore.
I would never use a lure tied directly to my braided mainline when fishing from the shore or indeed when wreck fishing from a boat.
You are gonna lose fish and tackle unnecessarily when your briaded line gets taken through the wreck or structure without a leader.
Having said this, your test was interesting , albeit the outcome being fairly obvious for the above reasons.

@1celtickiwi The lads who fish one of my local rivers do it for seatrout. Just a short dropper above the main lure with a streamer fly. Works a treat 👌

please test...... troll with mini soft lures ahead of your soft-bait . tie in a foot long piece of mono approx 1m before your main lure. turns the fish on sometimes.

i dropped my sea bass lure straight under boat (black westin soft lure) only to catch a 1.3m smooth-hound. WHAT A FIGHT on light gear !
