Thanks for those thoughts mate. Appreciated. So tell us more. What colours for bass work best and in what conditions. My experience is that natural colours like khaki work best alongside the white. I've done a lot of trolling for pike with multiple rods and on some days, it'll be one particular colour that gets the most takes, then you just switch other rods to that same lure/colour and you're hauling. When fish aren't active, it makes no difference what colour you use, when they are - it's often does - which is dependant on water clarity, time of day, overcast or sun, depth, etc. I think a lot of guys who lure fish for bass could learn a lot from good pike lure anglers, as most I see yapping away on YouTube haven't a clue. I've been bass fishing with lures for a while now and it didn't take me long to start doing well, a lot better than most I would say. Having an understanding of colour and when it can make a difference is something that will catch you more bass and no, pink and white are not the best colours - people only think they are as that's all they seem to use...

Posted 2026-10-04 · checked 2026-10-16.@BassLureFishi fish from the pier ...i use the standard black minnow ..I prefer pink or white or the white and yellow UV one because I fish mostly in the evening and sometimes in the night . Mostly I fish with the 8 and 10 gram ... sometimes 12 gram.

Posted 2026-10-01 · checked 2026-10-16.Thanks dude. White all day long. What about the white lures with red jig heads? So many patterns seem to have that for some reason. But it’s weird. No fish resembles it but it still catches. Maybe another test for me to do.

I am really starting to like this Berkley X9 braid, but the labelling is so confusing it can easily put you off using it

I always keep a close eye on a good angler fishing his local patch, those bass were caught so close in

The tackle you need for shore ballan wrasse

- Rod
- 9 to 10ft spinning rods rated to cast 2 to 3oz will handle most pier and breakwater general wrasse fishing using either float tackle or ledger tactics.
- Reel
- Fixed spool reels are the only choice. 4000 sized reels go well with the spinning rods, but for the bass and MPV rods choose a 5000 to 5500 size.
The same gear will suffice off the rock ledges, but if the fish potentially go over 4lb then a bass rod rated to 4oz, or the compact for travelling 3-piece Shakespeare XT MPV has more power available to play out a big wrasse.
