Hello Angelo. We weren’t trolling in this video. Just drifting over a sandbank with the engine off. The static rod is just placed in a rod holder. V easy and simple. As long as tide is running reasonably hard (say two days either side of springs) there is no need to retrieve.

If the boat is drifting or there's flow it's definitely not static , a fly angler knows this , or any one that fishes for bass in a river flow or needles , which is just a case of mending the line and keeping the lure at the required depth without pulling the lure to shore as mush as possible. It's the 'natural' way . Anglers that retrieve can add a LONG pause to there angling (with in reason of hitting a snagged bottom) to start to experience this more .

Yes, agreed—it’s still moving naturally with the tide. By “static” I mean the rod and reel aren’t being worked by the angler. The lure is simply drifting and moving with the current, rather than being actively retrieved or twitched.

Thanks mate for those words. Yes it’s a sand bank so no snags. The lure is a medium sized sidewinder skerries Pro. Not sure if weight. But I had a 4oz lead on a sliding boom on both the static and active retrieve. Hope that helps. Any other Qs do shout.

Thanks Darren, really appreciate you sharing that. 👍 I hadn’t come across “drifting softs” before filming this, so that’s really interesting. Our aim was simply to test a static rod against an actively retrieved lure under the same conditions, rather than claim the technique was new. I’ll definitely be experimenting more with those drift speeds and appreciate you taking the time to explain it. Tight lines! 🎣

I only use the cigar float when using bait. You dont fish this kind of lure static, you need to fish it on the retrieve.
