Hi Steve. It’s only 3m of water and with a 40g jig head it gets down the the bottom pretty quick. But agree re getting to bottom first.

I notice you seem to fish the lure high up in the water, where I tend to hit the smaller fish. Not sure your depth of water there, but do you ever hit bottom first?

Thanks dude. White all day long. What about the white lures with red jig heads? So many patterns seem to have that for some reason. But it’s weird. No fish resembles it but it still catches. Maybe another test for me to do.

Hey man. Thanks for your observations. The lures were identical apart from colour. All same size. The 40g Ebbrox Titan Shad. Water clarity wasn’t perfect which might explain why white won?

I find if a bass wants to take a lure it doesn’t mater which colour. It’s had days that you need to run through the couloirs and makes to see what the Bass want… I’ve have most of my success with the Westin Sandy Andy’s. They’ve out fished the sidewinders…. 5-1.. I’m not sponsored and pay top money for these just incase you think different.
So I think I’ll stay with them.

Great video but a few points you never mentioned clarity of the water at the depth your fishing, a major one I noticed you changed to the shad colour but it was bigger which also makes a difference. But I agree the white was winner 🏆

Always the larger Bass coming in closer next month, hopefully get amongst those, with a White Lure.😎🎣

First of all I’d like to say,the videos you put out there, are all to notch, brilliant, before you started this experiment with the 3 Different shades, I went with White, I fish the shorelines alone the Algarve Coastline, I’d say 90% of Bass I and other anglers catch here are on a White lure,a smaller % on the other shades, that being in all different clarity of water, high Water/ Low water, what is the lure clip you use in this video?, keep up the good work, Tight Lines.😎🎣

I do both, would take fly fishing everyday over lure, but it’s just not always as assessable as lure fishing! Great fun!

Thanks for the insights man. Every day is different. But glad to see I’m not alone with the success I’ve had with slow and low retrieve. In winter it’s even more pronounced. Hardly any movement in the lure or creature bait works a treat for me in harbours. It’s a question of confidence and trusting the method. Just because you might catch on a fast retrieve doesn’t mean that you won’t catch more or won’t catch bigger fish by slowing it down. Every day is different. Which is why we test everything.

Yep. I agree. but I’ve had great success recently on surface lures putting in a really long pause during the retrieve. Sometimes as long as five seconds. The larger fish have come to a surface lure worked fast and then completely stopped.

Thanks for the comment. I’ve been bass fishing for around 40 years, so I’m certainly not suggesting that a slow retrieve is always best. Speed can absolutely trigger fish in the right circumstances. I don’t do coarse fishing so can’t comment on the zander, pike and perch in fresh water.

But I strongly disagree that slowing, pausing or stopping a lure is bad advice. With soft plastics in particular, a very high proportion of takes come on the drop or immediately after a pause. In my experience, faster retrieves can also select for smaller, more aggressive fish, whereas some of my better bass have come from slowing things right down.

There’s no single “correct” retrieve — conditions, prey and the mood of the fish all matter. That’s really the point of these videos: we test different approaches on the water and see what the fish tell us.

As for the casting, I’ll keep practising. 😉. FYI I’m using. 1-7g rod most of the time and can’t beast a 15g -20g lure with it. And I’m on a boat often in 20m of water. Casting distance not necessary.

Err, I've been bass fishing for over 25 years, also lure fishing in general for pike, perch and zander. Predators react to speed, slow a lure down too much and you will rarely do well. Only when the fish are inactive will that be the optimum retrieve. Fishing lures at a decent pace triggers a lot more fish. Fish too slow and you'll be missing out on a lot of bass. You are giving bad advice pal. You might want to try casting a but further as well.
